One of the fun and exciting things about home remodeling and renovations is that you can learn a lot. I learned that bathtubs can be left or right handed (but that’s another post) and that doors can be left or right handed as well. Today I am going to share a story and a tip on determining whether your door is left handed or right handed.
Our master bedroom door needs to be replaced (as mentioned in this post, the former owner had an issue with doors) and because the door is not of standard height, it’s 8ft, and design, we had to custom order it. In order to do this, we had to determine whether the door was left handed or right handed. The gentlemen who is helping us with our renovations said that the door is a left handed door, so we went to Lowe’s and ordered a ~ $200 left handed door.
This got us thinking though, how do you determine what “hand” is your door? Last night when we were at the house, we stood outside the master bedroom door and did what everyone else would do. We pulled out our smart phones and googled.
Now, I want to fast forward really quick to share with you how to determine the hand of your door and then I will continue with the story of how the internet lied to us and we thought we ordered the wrong door for one whole minute.
Determining this is really simple and this method applies to most interior room doors.
- Open the door in question.
- Stand in the doorway facing the door latch and your back to the hinges. Which side of you is the door on?
- If the door is the left of you, it is a left handed door.
- If the door is on the right of you, it is a right handed door.
Exceptions to this rule may apply to exterior doors such as patio doors or doors that swing into a hallway, but most doors that lead to interior rooms such as a bedroom open in to the room.
If you’re still not sure, don’t worry! Simply take a picture of your door, know which way it swings, and bring that information to whomever will be supplying your door. They’ll help you determine which door is correct for you.
Now back to how we thought we ordered the wrong door for a whole minute.
Google provided us with some top results, one of which was a youtube video. According to the youtube video, our door was RIGHT HANDED! Holy shiznit! Did we just buy the wrong door!??! After reading the other results from google, we did determine that our door was infact a left handed door and the guy’s video was in fact, wrong. We checked out the comments and they confirmed that the guy is wrong and is confusing people.
I can EASILY see how someone would see that top result, not check other sources, and then order the wrong handed door. The crazy part is, he has comments requesting that he take down the video because it is misleading but he won’t!
I am not going to share the video link but if you really wanted to find it, just google.
